I love the look of the Vimeo player, far more than the youtube player. But let's be honest here, the reasons Youtube will stay ahead are many. Here a few of them...
1) head start of content and user base Youtube started earlier and thus got all the people to come first. Creating a new video site like vimeo is like build a new facebook and expecting people to come. Of course that's a bit harsh and vimeo is slightly different. In order for vimeo to overcome this they need to attract content creators which come to the next reason. 2)Ad money This is easily the biggest reason. Without ads on Vimeo, it will never beat Youtube. Ads on Youtube created this rush for people to create videos and make money resulting in the vast amounts of content. It also allows people to sustain their shows and creations 3) software Thanks to google, Youtube has a great software team creating new tools for their users. This is also because of the previous reason. They have more money. 4) Stable Google's servers and software allows youtube to be more stable and less buggy. I'm not saying Vimeo should give up. But they need to change their goals and drastically change inorder to concur the beast that is youtube.
